News Round-Up: 9 August 2010

More on Breaking Dawn...

Summit Entertainment has finally announced the release date of the second movie. Remember, in our last round-up we mentioned the first one will be out November 18, 2011. Via Twilight Lexicon, we learn that the next will be out almost a full year after, on November 16, 2012, totally bypassing summer 2012's anticipated Clash of the Box Office Titans. (Also on EW.)

HitFix comments that the move Summit is making with the later date could be because of the U.S. box office returns made by the saga's recent movies:
..."Eclipse" has grossed less than the previous chapter, "New Moon," with only $288.1 million domestic and a total of $644.8 million worldwide so far. "New Moon" ended up with $296 million domestic and $709 million worldwide and it's hard to see "Eclipse" matching that total as its grosses have slowed considerably. Considering "Eclipse" received universally better reviews than the previous two chapters and was the most action packed (i.e., male friendly) of the series this has to be something of a disappointment for Summit.
Of course, locally, Eclipse has actually done much better than New Moon. Box Office Mojo pegs Eclipse's Philippine gross during the last week of July to around $6.1M, clearly surpassing last year's New Moon earnings of $5.5M.

But let's go back to the issue of the one-year wait. For those who are worried, what's a year, guys? I'm sure we've experienced waiting longer for some things, like between Harry Potter books. The way I see it, it could mean some good things, such as the lengthening of the existence of the fandom. :P Also, Summit may be able to preview the movies in two Comic Cons instead of just one, and, for those of you who have dreams of traveling to the US for the premieres, it may give you more time to save up for it.

Then again, let's not get ahead of ourselves. They haven't even started filming it yet! (We'll probably be expecting a slew of fan photos in 3 or 4 months.) So let's look forward to all the small details first... like, what will movie Bella's wedding dress look like? Will the costume designer make something completely unique, will she scrounge through the vintage stores for a 1920s garment, or hire an amateur/professional fashion designer? (I remember liking the one from the InStyle feature drawn by Monique Lhuillier. The cut is simple enough to be Bella, has enough lace and high-end sophistication to earn Alice's approval, and has enough detail to look vintage and yet modern.) What do you envision Bella's dress to be?

Other news of note:

Scott Mendelson on The Huffington Post explains how Robert Pattinson (along with Zac Efron and Miley Cyrus) is a genuine movie star. But we fans know that already.

EW's Popwatch is pitting fictional "monsters" against each other in their Sexy Beasts Bracket Game. The latest had Taylor/Jacob against Brad Pitt/Louis, which I refuse to comment on. However, letting Rob as Edward go against fellow Brit and vamp Kate Beckinsale as Selene was just... well, it's a girl vs. guy showdown? I mean, fanwise? Obviously, we won, so I guess I can't complain. (Love Kate, but I gotta go with our boy Rob, you know?)

If you're an eternal teen, who better to blend in with than other eternal teens? Not vampires, but our favorite residents from Riverdale. Archie Comics' Twilite special issue is coming out this August and MTV has a preview of the first 11 pages. (Funny how the movie vampire is named "Edwin"... wasn't that the name Charlie mistook for Edward at one point?)

Anyway, since the summer movie season is winding down, and we have just discussed how long we'll be spending Twilight-less, we (or maybe at the moment, *I*) would like to encourage you to watch Vampires Suck. Obviously it's going to be another lame spoof movie, and the centerpiece will be our beloved series, but go see it. It looks interesting and it has Matt Lanter in it. Plus, like CdL just pointed out, we can definitely relate to it. Besides, we're mature enough to handle poking fun at ourselves, right?

I'm seeing "Vampires Suck" only for Matt Lanter. LOL.
