News Round-Up: July 19, 2009

Okay, before I write anything else, I would just like to drop this link to the Teen Choice Awards site for our 13-19 y/o members who live in the U.S. (Sadly, this isn't like MTV where we get to go crazy on the voting, wherever we live.) As usual, Twilight has been nominated for a lot of categories! So if you want to spread the fandom love around and show people the power of the fans, go vote! :)

Now that that's out of the way, let's go for some movie news. Let's start with something about the 3rd movie, to begin filming on August 17 in Vancouver.

Twilight Saga: Eclipse now has its Riley! Riley, the newborn vampire that aids Victoria in her quest for revenge, will be played by 25-y/o Australian actor Xavier Samuel, as scooped by popular Hollywood movie blogs. Apparently those who also auditioned for the role were G.I. Joe's Channing Tatum and Harry Potter's Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy). Hm, from big franchises to another? You guys have had your share, give the new kids a chance, yeah?

On to New Moon. Things are starting to pick up as we reach the November due date of the screen sequel of Stephenie Meyer's literary baby. It's slow, but it's moving.

First off, we have two exclusives from HitFix.com: an interview with producer Wyck Godfrey and, finally, a very in-depth one with director Chris Weitz! If you're curious how far they are in post-production, here's a snippet from the latter's interview:
I am about two weeks away from showing the director's cut to the studio. I've got some wolves with fur. Some wolves are still invisible basically and some wolves are like -- you've all probably seen the claymation versions. We are still in the light RD phases of what Edward looks like when he's hit -- what the vampires look like when he's hit with light and the diamond effect. Also, the kind of hallucinatory effect Bella has when she hears Edward's voice and she imagines him there. And then we are Alexandre Desplat has just started working on his music for the film. And we are just starting to put together what acts will be on the soundtrack, so it's kind of like keeping ten plates spinning at once, but it's all good because we've got Alexander Desplat who I think is one of the greatest film composers living and because of the kind of the strength of the franchise that I inherited, a lot of bands are really interested in working on the soundtrack and we got visual effects people. And that just leaves me hopefully not dropping the ball in terms of editing together the story.
Oh, and he mentioned something about horse-sized wolves, too. So maybe we won't be seeing puppies in the final cut? Crossing fingers now.

Set visit reports have also gradually been posted. Here's Day One of HitFix's featured set visit. Here's another by Hollywood.com. Even Rotten Tomatoes has its own set report! [minamic: I'm surprised, is all.] All three of them seem to have stumbled on the Volturi scene, and judging from the descriptions, it seems like Dakota Fanning's short scenes will be something to watch out for.

More on New Moon: Thom Yorke and Kings of Leon for the soundtrack? And a better look at the character designs for Edward, Bella and Jacob of the Twilight Graphic Novel from Everglow.

Since we're on the subject of graphic novels, Comic Con is upon us once again, and although Robert Pattinson will be attending, unfortunately, he will not be in any backstage interviews. Although this greatly reduces our RPattz eye-candy quota for the year, there are a few others to make up for it, namely four extra-hot wolves, Jamie Campbell-Bower, and Michael Sheen.

And if that still doesn't make up for it, maybe consider curling up under a Twilight throw blanket while eating your New Moon chocolate.
