"New Moon" and Taylor Lautner nominated for Saturn Awards

Every year, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films recognizes the best in the genre via the Saturn Awards. The Saturns are sort of the geekier equivalent of the Oscars.

This year, The Twilight Saga is being honored with two nominations.

Best Horror Film
THE BOX (Warner Bros.)
DRAG ME TO HELL (Universal)
FROZEN (Anchor Bay Films)
THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (Rogue / Universal)
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON (Summit Entertainment)
ZOMBIELAND (Sony)

I tried researching the Academy's definitions for Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror since I am puzzled by the classification of several other movies apart from New Moon, namely: Avatar, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and The Time Traveler's Wife.

In the case of New Moon, the film can't really be considered straight-up horror since there's no intention to terrify or frighten the audience. In many circles, The Twilight Saga is classified as Supernatural Romance, with romance being its primary niche. However, since the Academy slots films into only 4 categories, New Moon was put in Horror possibly because of the supernatural elements, some macabre themes, and the supernatural creatures that often grace horror stories: vampires and werewolves.

New Moon is in pretty good company in the Best Horror Film slate, but will have a tough time hurdling the likes of Zombieland and Drag Me To Hell.

Best Performance by a Younger Actor
TAYLOR LAUTNER (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) (Summit Entertainment)
BAILEE MADISON (Brothers) (Lionsgate)
BROOKLYNN PROULX (The Time Traveler’s Wife) (Warner Bros.)
MAX RECORDS (Where the Wild Things Are) (Warner Bros.)
SAOIRSE RONAN (The Lovely Bones) (Paramount)
KODI SMIT-MCPHEE (The Road) (The Weinstein Co.)

Wow. Taylor is on a roll these days, what with announcements of his casting for new movies like Stretch Armstrong and Abduction. It's nice to see that the Academy recognized his performance in New Moon, which I personally thought was one of the more effective portrayals in the film. However, he'll have a difficult time edging out film critics darling Saoirse Ronan and the talented newcomer Max Records.

No matter who wins, though, it's encouraging to see work on the Saga being recognized by more serious award-giving bodies. Congrats to Chris Weitz, Summit Entertainment, and Taylor Lautner!

I really wonder how they classify movies. Horror goes side-by-side with thriller, right? I think New Moon shouldn't be categorized as a horror film. I was thinking it should be on the fantasy category.

    Hahahaha Thinking aloud. :P

    I've just read this post,
New Moon was nominated in several categories for the upcoming Scorecard Review Movie awards. Then they were un-nominated shortly after!WHat the???
The reason is that all the major category was favored in NM. (Thx for the million twihards out there) So the award-giving-body says they should give chance to others. *pouts*
So our beloved New Moon was off the list.
