Twilight Gay 03: When the sparkle hit the fan, may bumayo

Twilight Gay is back! You can't really expect him to just keep quiet about Takipsilim, right? So here's his take on the whole mess about the so-called "Pinoy Twilight remake", and all we can say is: bato-bato sa langit, ang tamaan huwag magagalit. Smile na lang kayo, and sparkle!

As with previous installments, this column uses adult language and themes, and is not recommended for younger readers, or older readers who are too sensitive. :p

TWILIGHT GAY 03: When the sparkle hit the fan, may bumayo
By: Ronald

Have you guys missed me? It's been almost a month since my last post – not that anybody's been keeping track – and quite a lot has happened amongst the Twilight faithful.

The biggest thing to happen, of course, was the quick rise and equally quick descent of that cultural abortion that is "Takipsilim". If all of you were thinking that this issue is a horse already beaten to death, then you're wrong, because I haven't gotten my kicks in yet.

Of course every Filipino Twilighter knows the story: Some time around the holidays, word began to spread that ABS-CBN would be making Takipsilim, a Filipino adaptation of Twilight starring Rayver "Fishlips" Cruz and Shaina "Lookit! Mah boobs!" Magdayao.

Cue everyone running around screaming like Godzilla was all up in this bitch. Cue online petitions, online insults, and online wishes of death upon the ABS-CBN infidels. From all the ruckus, you would have thought Armageddon was coming, in the form of a teleserye.

People, people, people. Look at me. Take a deep breath. Listen carefully. GET A GRIP.

It's not that anybody ever thought that Takipsilim would be a great idea. While our local stations make the occasional great drama every once in a while, fantasy series have never been their specialty. My two personal favorties, Marina and Kampanerang Kuba, while camp classics, were far from being any kind of "good". Watching most Filipino fantaseryes is like sucking very warm shit through a very short straw.

What was so distressing to me, and probably to the saner Twilighters, was the somewhat subconscious hate some people displayed towards being Filipino.

There was a lot of hand-wringing as to how the (in)famous lion/lamb conversation would sound like in Filipino, with one particularly rabid commenter noting that "leon/tupa" doesn't have the same delicious flavor as lion/lamb.

Honey, the lion/lamb conversation is bad, and no amount of translation, in Elvish or otherwise, is going to make it sound any better. Even SMeyer agrees with me. You probably didn't mean to sound like an annoying, pretentious twat, but you did.

The ease with which most people threw our country under the bus was equally disconcerting. "Oh, how embarrassing! Them white people will laugh at us! All we ever do is remake stuff!" As if Hollywood is the bastion of originality. As if the people who comment on Perez Hilton are the cream of the intellectual crop. His whole schtick is putting cum stains on people's pictures! And their idea of witty reparte is "First!" and "Whoreanus!"

A lot of people were so eager to condemn a Filipino company daring to adapt a Western work that nobody even cared to ask how reliable a source a Pinoy Exchange forum poster is. While ABS-CBN showed their ineptitude and idiocy with their handling of the mess once the story broke, why didn't any one think that a $1 million investment isn't something you just calmly let loose on a public message board without any sort of fanfare? And as Clair de Lune pointed out, does nobody use fact checkers anymore? Not even the paper I work for?

There are so many valid reasons to hate the possibility of Takipsilim. Hate it because Rayver Cruz, Joross Gamboa, and Carlos Agassi can't act thier way out of a wet paper bag. Hate it because the special effects will no doubt look like something I could have just as easily done on Powerpoint. But don't use it as a convenient excuse to display your own insecurities about being brown.

Rayver, Shaina deny involvement in Takipsilim

ABS-CBNNews.com has a new article with statements from actors Rayver Cruz and Shaina Magdayao, as well as director Cathy Garcia-Molina, denying their involvement in the alleged remake of Twilight. Click here to read the article.

ABS-CBN Posts an Erratum to Dec. 24 article

ABS-CBN has posted an erratum to the December 24 article confirming that the network is indeed doing a remake of Twilight.

On December 24, abs-cbnNEWS.com uploaded a story, "ABS-CBN bags rights for local 'Twilight' remake". The source of the story was a report by entertainment writer Edgar Cruz posted on yehey.com.

The duty editor who uploaded the story failed to check with ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. whether the story was correct and accurate.

If you will recall, the Christmas Eve article disappeared 24 hours or so after it was posted. To refresh your memory, we once again offer a screen capture of the deleted article here.

Yehey.com's original report by Edgar Cruz may be found here.

Two questions:
1. So to get the root cause of this problem, we must ask: why, suddenly, did the Duty Officer not feel the need to check the authenticity of this report, considering it's about THEIR OWN NETWORK, and it would've probably taken just one simple phone call to Corporate Communications? It's just too weird for the Duty Officer to suddenly forget to follow protocol just like that.
2. Why wasn't Edgar Cruz credited in the December 24th article as the source of the report?

Constant vigilance, Twilighters!

ABS-CBN says Pinoy Twilight adaptation is not true

ABS-CBN has finally decided to address the issue of the Pinoy Twilight adaptation on their website, 5 days after the story broke on Christmas Eve:

"There is no truth to the Web reports, particularly in the Perez Hilton blogsite, that ABS-CBN is doing a local adaptation of "Twilight". ABS-CBN will be the first to announce if it is, in fact doing so," according to ABS-CBN Corporate Communications' Bong Osorio.

The parting shot (for now): In the same article, ABS-CBNNews.com claimed that they did post a story on an Internet report about the adaptation. This is the same post that disappeared from the site about 24 hours later, and that told Filipino fans that they have cause to "celebrate". Click here for a screencap of their first news post (thanks, Rome! thanks, Google!) That certainly did not read like a story about an Internet report because no other report was quoted or linked. And shouldn't the ABS-CBN News Site have confirmed the story with their Management in the first place before writing a story about the "Internet reports" so that they can clear the name of the station in the same article, thereby preventing any misinterpretations?

Nevertheless, we're glad that there is finally some sort of official word about this.

But hey, we will still be on Constant Vigilance.

"Twilight" Pinoy Remake is a Hoax?

Yehey.com's Buzzbox is reporting that ABS-CBN's plan to remake "Twilight" as "Takipsilim" is a hoax. Yehey's Entertainment Editor, Edgar Cruz, writes:

Save the effort and hate words, guys! Buzzbox clarified with ABS-CBN Corporate Communication Head Bong Osorio and after checking with ABS-CBN Television Head Cory Vidanes categorically stated: “There is no plan for ABS-CBN to remake ‘Twilight.’”

Hold your vampire celebrations, though, Twilighters. While this is comforting news to most of us who are against the idea of the Pinoy Remake, there are still several unanswered questions here.

1. Why did ABS-CBN post the news confirming that they are indeed remaking Twilight on their News Site in the first place? Why did they take down the article later on?

2. Why can't ABS-CBN just make a simple official statement on their website saying "No, we are not going to do a remake of Twilight" if they really aren't, or "Yes, we are going to do a remake of Twilight" if they really are? An official statement should effectively shut down all the speculation, which, believe us, is not doing anything good for the reputation of the Philippine Entertaiment Industry in the eyes of the international media and foreign Twilight fans. We've seen all the comments, and while we know most people have over-reacted, those comments still hurt.

Until we see an actual official statement from ABS-CBN explaining all this, we can't entirely consider this matter closed. We will ease up a bit and play some vampire baseball to celebrate, but to quote, ironically enough, GMA's Mike Enriquez, "di namin ito tatantanan".

Happy Christmas!

Happy Christmas, Twilighters, Maligayang Pasko! And if you don't celebrate it, then, Happy Holidays!

Edit (7:00 PM) It seems that the ABS-CBN news link that we've posted before cannot be accessed anymore. We leave that to your own interpretation ;) [mabelletaka]

Pinoy Twilight "Takipsilim" is a Go According to ABS-CBN News.

Good morning everyone! And what a sad morning it is with the news that yes, we are now almost 95% sure that a Filipino remake of Twilight is real. (The remaining 5% is us vainly clinging to the hope that Santa will come down our relative chimneys tonight and yell "Surprise! It's fake!") Check out the little ditty over at the ABS-CBN news site.

Filipino fans of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series will soon have another reason to celebrate after broadcasting giant ABS-CBN bagged the exclusive rights to make a local television series based on the vampire novels.

Initial reports said ABS-CBN paid $1 million with co-producer Ignite Media for the rights to the Twilight series.

The new series, tentatively titled "Takipsilim", will reunite the onscreen tandem of Rayver Cruz and Shaina Magdayao.

Taping for the series will start February of next year. Some parts of the series will be shot abroad and the other locations include Tagaytay, Bukidnon and Baguio. The series will be directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina.

In fairness, our Danag idea would probably be WAY more original, despite it being just a parody. Which reminds me, we called this (circa Danag Podcast Episode 1) and obviously you haven't been listening so better pay up! Haha!

I am not sure that a "celebration" is in order, ABS-CBN. But whatever. You have the money to do whatever you want, right? We just can't believe Summit Entertainment and Stephenie Meyer actually approved the idea.

Edit:
For those who want to flood ABS-CBN with email (let's hope we annoy them so much they'll veto the idea... lolz... or at the very least SPEED UP their confirmation or denial) here it is: feedback@abs-cbnNEWS.com.

Edit: Maybe the 5% will come true? This site claims that someone from ABS-CBN denied the news. However, the link to the "testimony" (which led to plurk) doesn't exist. Let's keep hoping.

New Poll: Pinoy Version of Twilight - Love or Hate the idea?

Rumour has it a local network has acquired the rights to produce Twilight for Philippine television. Although this remains to be a rumour (we have not seen an official press release and we're not inclined to ask for fear of finding out that the rumours are actually true), we want to know what you think. So check the new poll in the side bar and vote!

UPDATE (1:19PM): Yehey.com has picked up the news. Still hoping this doesn't mean it's legit....

UPDATE (Dec. 24, 9:34AM): We still haven't seen any OFFICIAL press releases as of now, so we decided to ask Hachette Book Group and Viva International if they can confirm the news. The Philippine representative of Hachette said this is the first she's heard of the news. We're waiting to hear from Viva, and eventually, ABS-CBN (we hope). We'll bring you more info about this as we get it. For now, calm down and enjoy the holidays! :) BTW, online petitions don't work, so don't bother.
