"New Moon" and Taylor Lautner nominated for Saturn Awards

Every year, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films recognizes the best in the genre via the Saturn Awards. The Saturns are sort of the geekier equivalent of the Oscars.

This year, The Twilight Saga is being honored with two nominations.

Best Horror Film
THE BOX (Warner Bros.)
DRAG ME TO HELL (Universal)
FROZEN (Anchor Bay Films)
THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (Rogue / Universal)
THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON (Summit Entertainment)
ZOMBIELAND (Sony)

I tried researching the Academy's definitions for Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror since I am puzzled by the classification of several other movies apart from New Moon, namely: Avatar, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and The Time Traveler's Wife.

In the case of New Moon, the film can't really be considered straight-up horror since there's no intention to terrify or frighten the audience. In many circles, The Twilight Saga is classified as Supernatural Romance, with romance being its primary niche. However, since the Academy slots films into only 4 categories, New Moon was put in Horror possibly because of the supernatural elements, some macabre themes, and the supernatural creatures that often grace horror stories: vampires and werewolves.

New Moon is in pretty good company in the Best Horror Film slate, but will have a tough time hurdling the likes of Zombieland and Drag Me To Hell.

Best Performance by a Younger Actor
TAYLOR LAUTNER (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) (Summit Entertainment)
BAILEE MADISON (Brothers) (Lionsgate)
BROOKLYNN PROULX (The Time Traveler’s Wife) (Warner Bros.)
MAX RECORDS (Where the Wild Things Are) (Warner Bros.)
SAOIRSE RONAN (The Lovely Bones) (Paramount)
KODI SMIT-MCPHEE (The Road) (The Weinstein Co.)

Wow. Taylor is on a roll these days, what with announcements of his casting for new movies like Stretch Armstrong and Abduction. It's nice to see that the Academy recognized his performance in New Moon, which I personally thought was one of the more effective portrayals in the film. However, he'll have a difficult time edging out film critics darling Saoirse Ronan and the talented newcomer Max Records.

No matter who wins, though, it's encouraging to see work on the Saga being recognized by more serious award-giving bodies. Congrats to Chris Weitz, Summit Entertainment, and Taylor Lautner!

The complete list of nominees for the 36th Saturn Awards can be found here, via NewWorlds.ph. The winners will be announced on June 24th.

News Round-Up: 2 June 2009

Of course, everyone knows that Twilight bagged the Best Movie popcorn at yesterday's 2009 MTV Movie Awards. Find out what the cast had to say about that! :)

Stephenie Meyer also posted the following message on her website:

Thank you, everybody who voted at the MTV Movie Awards! It was awesome to see Twilight get so much love. Congratulations to Catherine and Rob and Kristen and all of the cast and everyone at Summit and everybody on the crew! You all did an amazing job and you deserve your popcorn!

Twilight fans are the best!

XOXO
Steph

Cam Gigandet is very happy about winning Best Fight this year with Rob. It's his second award for that category in a row!

E! Online's Marc Malkin got a hold of the casting notices for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and reveals 3 of the roles on the list:

Riley "is a handsome, blond, clean-cut college boy who falls victim to Victoria." He's in his early to mid 20s and "plays an integral role in Victoria's attempt to murder Bella Swan."

"Seth Clearwater is a tall, gangly-limbed boy with a huge, happy grin. Seth idolizes Jacob."

Leah Clearwater - "She is tall and slender with beautiful skin and short cropped black hair. She would be considered gorgeous if not for the perpetual scowl she carries due to a broken heart and her anger issues."

Click here for more details from E!

Access Hollywood also sent us a couple of videos. The first is Taylor Lautner talking about being.. ehem... shirtless in cold weather. *coughjailbaitcough*

The second is of various cast members talking about crazy fan encounters.

As always, thanks to Rachel of Access Hollywood!

In related news, Tom Lennon says he and Paul Rudd should win Best Kiss because of the sheer difficulty of what they did, as opposed to Kristen's very easy task of kissing Rob Pattinson. I'm sure you will all agree... that it's easy enough to kiss Rob Pattinson, that is. :p

Also, Paramore campaigns for Twilight to win Best Kiss!

So, what do you think? Does Twilight deserve all the nominations? Would you actually vote for the film and the actors against that kind of competition? Let us know in the comments! :)

News Round-Up: 30 March 2009

Twilight was voted Favorite Book at this year's Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, besting The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and surprise, the Harry Potter series. Taylor Lautner received the award on behalf of Stephenie Meyer. More photos of Taylor can be found at BellaandEdward.com's photo gallery. Video of the award presentation is here courtesy of Twilight Lex (ooh, Hugh Jackman and Sandra Bullock got slimed!).

NewMoonMovie.org has photos of what seems to be the set for Sam's house.

News Round-Up: 13 March 2009

Before Google Chrome decides I've opened too many tabs and crash, let's round-up today's Twilight news and relieve Chrome of the stress. :)

Style.com has posted the full article about Rob Pattinson that appears on the latest issue of GQ, entitled "He's Hot, He's Sexy, He's Undead". Click the link to read and to see more photos from his GQ photoshoot. [I've always loved GQ's feature articles. Their write-up on Robert Downey Jr. was fantastic! This one isn't any different. You see a very different side of Rob that other articles don't focus much on. The next person I want on GQ is, of course, Peter Facinelli... oh, what the heck, do a feature on all the men of Twilight! It'll be exciting to find out what a day with Edi Gathegi will be like. -CdL]

Twilight is nominated for Best Fantasy Film in the 35th Saturn Awards presented annually by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films. Twilight is up against pretty stiff competition (with no less than The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in the list), so keep your fingers crossed.

Twilight Italia is asking everyone to sign a petition for Summit to shoot the last part of New Moon in Volterra. They present a very convincing case, showing us in photos in videos the real places that Stephenie Meyer wrote about, including the alleyway where Bella finds Edward, the dead end with the manhole, the subterranean tunnels, the Clock Tower at Piazza del Priori, and more. Click here to learn more about the petition and to see photos and videos. [Normally, we would say that online petitions don't work, but I certainly hope this one does! -CdL]

Variety has also joined the ranks of the sites confirming that Juan Antonio Bayona has been chosen by Summit to direct Eclipse. While Variety is a very reliable source, nothing is really confirmed until Summit posts an official press release.  UPDATE 11:35am - Well, what do you know! I did say it's not confirmed unless Summit says so, right? Well the LA Times spoke to Erik Feig himself, the president of Summit, and he says that they haven't offered the Eclipse job to anyone. He adds that nobody even bothered to ask them if this is true before running the story (we're looking at you, Nikki Finke!) Thanks, Twilight Lex!

Examiner.com looks into the Twilight fandom and answers the question "Does Twilight appeal only to teens?" [Well, we've known for a while now that it appeals to a much wider demographic than that! After all, the TCP Admins are working professionals, we have a bunch of Twilight guys and moms, and we even have a Twilight Gay! -CdL]

Forbes.com has listed the 10 of Hollywood's Most Valuable Young Stars, and The Twilight Saga newcomer Dakota Fanning secured the #3 spot behind Daniel Radcliffe and Miley Cyrus.

InStyle went shopping with Ashley Greene!

BuddyTV lists 10 suggestions to ensure we get an awesome New Moon movie. [I would agree regarding the Volturi, but only the part about the audience feeling the threat they impose. I'd rather not see them looking like they're typical horror film vampires. If Rosenberg and Weitz are any good, they will give us something new but very effective. -CdL]

E! Online features a new video where the "Twilight Villains Talk New Moon".

In Episode 12 of the Danag Podcast, we mentioned Pocket Edward. We also mentioned that everyone seems to be working out, except for Rob. Well, at least Pocket Edward is working out enough for two people - himself and Life-Size Edward. There's even sparkly work-out equipment involved!

Spoiler TV has posted a LOT of photos from the set of New Moon. It looks like the pics were taken during dress rehearsals down in Vancouver. Peter is blonde again [poor Peter, I hope that's a wig. No matter, he still looks fabulous. -CdL], Jackson's hair is looking good [maybe because he's now actually bald and they don't have to deal with his real hair -CdL], Ashley's back in the short wig [uh, I kinda like the Twilight wig better... -CdL], Kellan's hair is dark again, Rob's hair is looking good [Dear make-up people, please don't touch Rob's hair. kthnxbai. -CdL], Taylor has that long wig again [ugh, they didn't change it! When he "cuts" his hair in the story, please don't slick it back, make-up people! We love Taylor's regular hair. -CdL], and the biggest surprise is Nikki's new blonde wig [Okay, I think I like Nikki's real hair dyed blonde than this wig. It looks really fake, and doesn't seem to suit her looks. -CdL]. And since I've said way too much already, just click that link above to view the pics for yourselves. Let us know what you think by posting a comment. :)

News Round-Up: January 31

Forbidden Planet has revealed the new NECA Edward and Bella 7" Action Figure 2-Pack. It is now available for pre-order at Forbidden Planet, and should retail for around £24.99 or PhP1,600.

In related news, the NECA 11.5" Edward Cullen Action Figure is now locally available at 2Rats (with branches in Greenhills, Goldcrest, and Eastwood), and retails for PhP1,200. Thanks to Bjie for the update.

The Los Altos Town Crier has an essay from a seventh-grader about how Twilight Invokes Multiple Genres to Serve Its Romance.

Collider.com has interviews with Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, Edi Gathegi, and Rachelle Lefevre about New Moon.

PETA has awarded Twilight the 2008 Libby Award for the Most Animal Friendly Movie, which really boggled a lot of people since the Cullens drink animal blood. [There's probably a different criteria for this, because it's gonna be awkward if it turns out PETA didn't do their research and thought "vegetarian vampire" meant the Cullens eat vegetables.]

E! Online is asking "What's the scoop on the New Moon soundtrack?"
